Nightfall is a magical family-friendly outdoor event which includes a self-guided trail of wonderful light-based artworks complemented by music, storytelling and performance. It also features beautifully decorated dwell areas where children and families can relax with some warming refreshments and take part in hands-on workshop activities. It’s the perfect place for families to connect and share a magical evening experience together in the wintertime.
This year’s Nightfall is themed around ‘A Stellar Rainbow’ and aims to provide a joyful escape to the grey we have all experienced during a challenging year and celebrate the rainbow of colours hidden within the night skies. The event will be a colourful journey into the night, inspired by stars, comets, planets and nebulae, bringing together the vibrant beauty of the evening.
Your Nightfall experience will start at the main entrance of Stewart park and take you around a wonderful trail of installations and artworks along some of the woodland walks in the park - shining a new light on some of the park’s features, including the pond area which will be transformed by colour!

All the colours of the light trail!
The light trail includes a selection of beautiful, colourful artworks - look out for Submergence, an immersive walkthrough experience by Squidsoup which uses many thousands of individual points of suspended light to create feelings of presence and movement within physical space.
The Night Garden by Stellar Projects will bring a tranquil and beautiful wildflower meadow to life at night, creating a sense of peace and joy, celebrating the simple pleasure to be found in the natural world. Harmonic Portal by Chris Plant is a beautiful, soothing meditation connecting colour, sound, light and texture and End Over End by Studio Vertigo - a larger than life illuminated slinky toy!
... at the end of the rainbow
The trail will also include features specially designed for children, adding playful moments to their journey around the park.
The trail will culminate in a special finale area in the courtyard of Askham Bryan College where we invite you to stay a while, listen to some live music while you soak up the evening atmosphere, treat yourself to a hot chocolate or snack and get creative in our workshops where you can make a Nightfall memento to take home. Here you will also be able to see more artworks such as Shadowdance by Impossible which takes ‘dancing in the streets’ to a whole new level – visitors become performers as floodlights magnify your multi-coloured silhouette to the size of a building.
We are thrilled to be able to bring this wonderful event to you and we hope you will be able to join us - look out for details of the full programme coming soon!
